Tonight’s theme is rock and roll. This is always a hit or miss theme for me – so let’s see how they do! This show gets moving very quickly, without much ado the first act is announced.
LeRoy Bell – We’ve Got Tonight (Bob Seger) – this is a pretty song and is perfectly in his wheelhouse. LA say he is boring, but I think he has rock star qualities. The tone of his voice is like butter! The judges ripped him to shreds, they all pretty much thought he needed more umph in order to go any further. We’ll see how the fans vote.
Rachel Crow – (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction (The Rolling Stones) – this is a bit of a grown up song, but her voice is ideally suited for a song like this and her youth can bring a fun edge to the performance. I think the background lights and dancers and glitz overshadow her a bit, since she is just a little bitty thing out there on the stage. That is not her fault though. She absolutely holds her own.
Chris Rene – No Woman, No Cry (Bob Marley) – glad that Chris is working so hard on his sobriety, even if he doesn’t win the competition, I feel as if he has already won the fight. I did not like the freestyle at the beginning of the song, but as it constantly seems with Chris – the chorus was great and so was the remainder of the song. His vibe was way more R&B/Hip Hop than Rock & Roll, but I still dug it.
Stacy Francis – It’s All Coming Back to Me Now (Meatloaf) – I think most people are more familiar with the Meatloaf version of this song but Celine’s has a big impact as well. She needs to step up and bring it. As much as I like her, she is beginning to bore me a bit. That is never a good thing. She is not winning me over. This is a crappy song choice (Nicole really needs to do better) and the arrangement was uninspiring. I believe someone from the Over 30s will be going home tomorrow night.
Melanie Amaro – Everybody Hurts (R.E.M) – this is a great song…would love to see her rock it! She has such a beautiful voice and the arrangement of this song was nice and simple. She lost the background and all you focused on was her on the stage. The piano brought in some church when needed and helped her to get to the proper crescendo and emotion the song requires. Nicely done.
Josh Krajcik – The Pretender (The Foo Fighters) – I think I have never heard this song before…it happens from time to time. The low tone at the start of the song did not appeal to me, but when the tempo picked up it was a better song. Still not familiar with the song – but he did a good job. The most “authentic” rock performance of the night, as was expected.
Astro – I’ll Be Missing You (Diddy/Faith Evans) – this definitely is not a rock song since it is a Diddy song that uses a “Police” hook. I am sure it will spark more squabbling between LA and Simon. It was a great performance but it was not at all rock and roll. The kid is wonderful, but…what are you going to say.
Lakoda Rayne – Your Love/Go Your Own Way (Outfield/Fleetwood Mac) – A mash-up? I wasn’t expecting that and I was kind of hoping that we were done with that. Their harmonies, when on are pretty perfect, but when they are off – it hurts. This was a meh performance. They are going to have to hope someone was a little worse than them tonight.
Drew – With Or Without You (U2) – this song is from one of my favorite all-time albums. I really enjoy that break in her voice…it is immensely listenable. Her singer/songwriter thing puts her in the Sara Bareilles category for me. Sara, though not a HUGE rock star, is an amazing artist and is making an incredible living doing what she wants to do. Drew could push it a smidgen more, but she is really brilliant.
Marcus Canty – Piece of My Heart (Janis Joplin) – wow – this is a crazy song choice!! Fingers crossed he will knock it out of the park…the last to perform is typically the pimp spot, so let’s see what happens. OK, Mr. Marcus is a bad man! This may not be his strongest performance (vocally) but his stage presence is ridiculous and I am sure he did enough to garner votes! Did he just slide through that girl’s legs??? Nice! He was rock and roll tonight!
How did the contestants do with the rock genre?? I think Stacy and Chris were the weakest tonight, Lakoda Rayne was right behind them. Rihanna performs on the elimination show tomorrow.
