Yay – the All-Stars are here!! Cannot wait to see these dances tonight! Also – I am super excited about all of the Emmy Nominations this show garnered! Super big ups to Cat Deeley, the best host on TV!! All of the Top 10 will perform a solo and they will dance with an All-Star. OK – I just gasped! I am such a major fan of Neil Patrick Harris (NPH)! I had heard that he might be a guest judge – so I am ecstatic to see him on the panel.
Marko and Chelsie Hightower (Season 4) – Samba (Cinema Italiano – The Ron Fair Remix – Kate Hudson) – Jason Gilkison choreographer. I love seeing Chelsie back on her home stage. She is amazing on Dancing With The Stars but this is where she got her start. This is a great Samba and Chelsie brings the sexy out of Marko. He was feeling it and they were clearly feeling each other. He had nice frame and worked his hips marvelously. Fabulous way to start the show.
Sasha – Contemporary (Syrup & Honey – Duffy) – I think the solos are filler, but Sasha is pretty spectacular to watch. Cat calls her the “warrior princess”!
Jordan and Brandon Bryant (Season 5) – Contemporary (Who Are You (acoustic) – Jessie J) – Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson choreographers. I love Dwight and Desmond – they are so fearless with their dancers. Brandon is like a chocolate sculpture, sensuous and strong. I believe he may be the ultimate partner. There are so many tiny little moves in this dance and they are perfectly in sync and connected. The fluidity of the dance was quite good. I love that NPH admits that he does not know the dance terms, but he knows what moves him.
Jess – Broadway (Come By Me – Harry Connick, Jr.) – I am not a Jess fan, but he earned some points by picking this Harry Connick, Jr. jam – it is one of my faves.
Tadd and Comfort Fedoke (Season 4) – Hip Hop (Look at Me Now – Chris Brown f. Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes) – Chuck Maldonado choreographer. I believe this is Chuck’s first time on the show. He is asking Comfort to be gutter sexy…dang! I really like this song. Chuck really choreographed to Tadd’s strength, I sometimes forget that he is a B-Boy because he has been dancing so well out of his style. He really slayed hip hop, which is against his natural tendency – the judges were right, he outdanced Comfort which is crazy hard to do!
Melanie – Contemporary (You’re The One That I Want – Angus and Julia Stone) – how cool is this song? It took me a minute to realize it was the song from Grease.
Mitchell and Melody Lacayanga (Season 1) – Broadway (Take Off With Us – All That Jazz) – Tyce Diorio choreographer. I can hear my friend Claudia wailing now…she is not a fan of Tyce – but I LOVE him and I like him even more when he reinterprets Bob Fosse! Melody was the Season 1 runner up and it is great to see her back. Mitchell is built for Fosse choreography. His leaps and stylized movement is ideal for the music. Melody brings definite sex to the table and I remember some of her better performances were the ones in the Broadway genre. This was a little flatter than I wanted it to be – but Mitchell was committed.
Ricky – Contemporary (Daylight Breaks – Cassidy Haley) – he really knows how to extend and point his toes.
Clarice – Jazz (Royal T – Crookers f. Roisin Murphy) – her dance was pretty funky, she was really feeling it…I am not a fan of the ruffle around the neck or the little tail piece…
Caitlynn and Pasha Kovalev (Season 3) – Argentine Tango (Malajunta – Orquestra Color Tango) – Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo choreographers. Of all of the Latin ballroom dances, this is the one that I would most like to learn. It is passionate and angry and sensual all at different points. The thing that I most love about Clarice is the thing that I hate the most. I never realize who she is because she is such a chameleon. She so entrenches herself in the dance that I have no idea who she is. This is probably great for those who will cast her in the future. This was a wonderful dance – they were seamless.
Mitchell – Contemporary (This Time – John Legend) – crazy musculature, this kid is very strong.
Sasha and Twitch Boss (Season 4) – Hip Hop (Misty Blue – Dorothy Moore) – Christopher Scott choreographer. They will be re-igniting the flame…bring it. OMG – I could not look away from the screen. They burned the stage! Christopher Scott chose the perfect song for this routine. The steps in-between the beats were the most explosive and the pieces of clothes flying off did not hurt either. Wonderful performance.
Jordan – Contemporary (Tonight – Lykke Li) – this girl could spin on the head of a needle.
Jess and Kathryn McCormick (Season 6)- Contemporary (The Lonley – Christina Perri) – Stacey Tookey choreographer. Kathryn was a favorite in Season 6, pairing her with Jess gives him points. I am nervous watching him do lifts because he really does not seem confident. He overacts (Broadway) and I rarely believe what he is trying to portray. This was a good performance, not great.
Tadd – B-Boy (Everything I Can’t Have – Robin Thicke) – his stunts are spellbinding! Makes me nervous when he hovers on the edge of the stage.
Melanie and Pasha Kovalev – Viennese Waltz (Everybody Hurts – Tina Arena) – Jason Gilkison choreographer. Pasha is hardcore, I forget that there has not been any other ballroom male to make the scene like Pasha has on this show. I miss Melanie with Marko but this ethereal dance almost makes me forget that they were ever partners. Does Pasha make everyone look brilliant? I think he does! This was such a pretty dance.
Caitlynn – Contemporary (Cosmic Love – Florence+The Machine) – she suffers the same fate as Clarice for me…I actually think theuy are the same dancer.
Ricky and Allison Holker (Season 2) – Jazz (Precious Things – Tori Amos) – Tyce Diorio choreographer. This is a bad dream – that what Tyce says. Allison performed one of favortie SYTYCD dances of all-time. I thought it was a shame that she only made it to the Top 8 her season. This is an extremely physical dance. They are really hating on each other…it really is a bad dream. I thought it was nicely conceived. Scary…
Marko – Contemporary (More Than Anyone – Gavin DeGraw) – this is one of my favorite songs of ALL TIME!
Clarice and Robert Roldan – Bollywood (Aila Re Aila – Khatta Meetha) – Nakul Dev Mahajan choreographer. Bollywood has been the death of many dancers on this show. Let’s see what they can do! Welcome back Robert! It is all about kissing this season, it seems. There is actually very little to no kissing in actual Bollywood films – so, interesting. They danced their butts off and I was all in! A tremendous performance.
