The Best of the Week: 8 July 2011
It was a slow week “pop culture”ly speaking! Here is what peaked my interest!
Best TV: Single Ladies marathon. VH-1 has a fun new show called Single Ladies that is produced by Queen Latifah. The story focuses on single African American women in Atlanta and the trials ans tribulations of the single life. It can easily be written off as a copy-cat of Sex and The City, but I think the show has a different appeal. First – it is not often that you see so many gorgeous and talented Black women in lead roles on television, second – the stories are easy to relate to, especially if you are a single lady of a certain age! Stacey Dash (Clueless) and LisaRaye (The Players Club) are standouts in this cast.
Also enjoyed: Torchwood: Miracle Day, MasterChef, SYTYCD
Best Movie: I did not foray into the movie theater this week, but I did check out my cable box (I’m paying for it…). I watched Burlesque. Before you groan – I have to say that I thought the film was much better than it was portrayed to be by critics and some moviegoers. I really enjoyed the music and how can you resist Stanley Tucci? The story moved as I expected it would – but I was pleased with the outcome. Check this one out if you took a pass when it was initially released.
Best Book: This week I read BossyPants (Tina Fey). It is not a memoir – so this was a bonus for me – it is really a series of essays giving ladies (and men) some fun and funny advice. She tells stories about her SNL days. She talks about how 30 Rock was not supposed the hot that it is today. My favorite story (the one that had me laughing out loud) was her recollection of trekking across the Eastern United States to visit her family for the holidays. I would have to say that this is one of the better books I have read this year. This is definitely worth your time.
Best Music: I have been listening to Jill Scott’s new album Light of the Sun. This is Jill’s first album on the Blues Babes/Warner Bros. label. I will say that is has a more pop appeal – but she knows how to belt when she needs to. Check out lead off single “Shame” also “So In Love”.
