Stomach Cancer Survival Rate
Stomach cancer commonly also referred to as Gastric Cancer, is a medical condition when there is a visible growth within the glandular, hormonal or immune system cells, and the nervous system tissues.
Most diagnosed cases of stomach cancer are glandular in root, with the cancer cells being developed in the stomach lining glands. There are different stages of development of cancer cells within the human body which is one of the most important factors determining a patient’s survival rate.
A Stomach Cancer Survival Rate is the calculated percentage of life expectancy of a patient who is suffering from this terminal illness. As per the studies conducted by medical researchers all over the world on this particular disease, it has been found that most patients diagnosed with stomach cancer at the localized (initial) stage have a survival rate of a minimum 5 years or more.
This percentage can be increased or decreased depending on the knowledge of the exact location of the cancer growth within the stomach, its developmental stage, the person’s age, his/her diet, lifestyle, medicinal intake and general health.
Another factor may be the patient’s bodily response to the treatment. There are some people whose body responds very well to a particular treatment while others don’t. According to the reports submitted by the American Cancer Society, the prognosis of a full five year survival rate applies to only 28% of cancer victims who were lucky enough to be diagnosed at the initial stage.
For the extremely lucky ones, who are diagnosed at the stage 0, when the cancer cells are just present but haven’t fully grown or spread, the survival rate is as much as 90%, if its diagnosed at the stage1A when the cancer cells have developed under the connective tissue, the survival rate declines to a 78%, in the stage 1B where the cancer spreads to the lymph nodes, the survival rate further declines to 58% and finally when the cancer is full grown and reaches Stage II , the survival rate is just 34%.
The most disappointing news for a doctor as well as the patient is to diagnose stomach cancer at the last stage , where the five year survival rate comes down to hardly 8 to 20% depending on how strongly and how deep the cancer cells have developed within the stomach lining and the lymph nodes. When the cancer reaches a stage when it metastasizes or spreads completely to other organs, the survival rate of that patient hits the lowest which is a mere 7%.
The only way to increase the Stomach Cancer survival rate is through early detection, in combination with proper and timely medication along with a healthy nutritional diet and balanced lifestyle.
