Tonight the contestants will be singing songs by their personal idols. Conjuring up The Hunger Games, Ryan tells the Top 9, “May the odds be ever in your favor.” I hope we won’t be seeing the contestants battle to the actual death! The contestants will also be wearing clothes from Tommy Hilfiger’s Authentic Icon (AI) line of clothing. Stevie Nicks is the mentor helping Jimmy Iovine tonight. I love her. Ryan lets us know that the contestants will also be singing trios.
Colton Dixon (Everything) Lifehouse – Stevie says that she watches the show every week and she was happy that he did not cut his hair. Colton says this is his favorite worship song, Stevie says that it can also be sung as a love song. It is a moving song and I have heard it in a church before. I like his performance of this song. His high-ish notes were pleasing and he really settles into this song nicely.
Skylar Laine (Gunpowder and Lead) Miranda Lambert – I really like this song and I think it will be a great fit for her. How cool was it that Stevie Nicks sang harmony with her during her rehearsal. Skylar is so in her element and she is following in the footsteps of Miranda (she got her start on a reality country music competition). She told the story the way she was supposed to…I would download Skylar’s version. This is the first time in a few weeks that she has impressed me. Great performance.
It’s a two-hour show tonight and the producers need to fill time, so tonight we get trios. The first trio is Colton Dixon, Elise Testone and Phillip Phillips. They sing a tribute to Fleetwood Mac. Colton gets the first verse of Landslide, Elise gets Edge of Seventeen and Phillip closes with Don’t Stop. This is a strong group.
Heejun Han (A Song For You) Donny Hathaway – He has to prove that he can be serious when performing. He got spanked last week and this week he is trying to step it up…he needs to. This is one of my very favorite songs – Stevie thinks he will do great. Fingers crossed. This kid can actually sing – he just has made crap song choices the last few weeks. This was the absolutely right song for him tonight! I am freaking out about how good this performance was. He just put someone else in jeopardy tonight because he sang his face off tonight.
Hollie Cavanagh (Jesus Take The Wheel) Carrie Underwood – I figured she would sing a Carrie song after all the love they were throwing to each other via Twitter this week. She made Stevie cry during rehearsals. This girl has a big voice and she sings the song with the perfect amount of balance. Blowing when she needs to and super soft when she needs us to lean in and listen. So far this has been a great night! Wow!
DeAndre Brackensick (Sometimes I Cry) Eric Benet – I haven’t heard any Eric Benet in awhile, good for DeAndre for bringing him back. The problem may be that many people will not be familiar with it. Stevie tells him to slow the song down and they give him some hints for singing on television. Oh my goodness – his falsetto sounds so pretty, reminiscent of Prince! When he is good he is really, really good. It looks as if he took the tips about singing to the camera as well. This was a comeback performance! Good job. The judges give him a standing ovation.
Jessica Sanchez (Sweet Dreams) Beyoncé – It’s probably a good thing she chose Bey…this is her wheelhouse. I like the idea that this is slowed down version – it separates her from head to head comparisons to Bey. The open with just the harp as her accompaniment was brilliant. She sings much better when the song is mid to slow tempo. She reminds me of singer Charice. This was another great performance.
DeAndre Brackensick, Joshua Ledet and Heejun Han perform a Michael Jackson medley. They sing The Lady in My Life, Rock With You, and P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing). J Lo states that it is a good thing this isn’t So You Think You Can Dance!
Phillip Phillips (Still Rainin‘) Johnny Lang – the only thing I know about Johnny Lang is that his sister, Jesse Langseth, was on AI Season 8. Stevie gives him the ultimate compliment and says that he could have been a member of Fleetwood Mac! That is major. I don’t know this song, but it seems to be right in his lane. He has an electric guitar tonight and he is NOT wearing gray! Perfect song choice for him.
Joshua Ledet (Without You) Mariah Carey (Harry Nilsson) – Dionne Warwick and Jordin Sparks are in the audience tonight. This is a crazy hard song to sing…I have heard many horrible versions of this song. He sounds great using restraint where required, not immediately reaching for the huge note. The strings were awesome in the background. I love how he ramps up as the song builds. He just separated himself from everyone else tonight.
Last trio of the night - Hollie Cavanagh, Skylar Laine and Jessica Sanchez take on Madonna…Like a Prayer,Borderline and Express Yourself are the chosen songs. They were fun – Skylar’s twang was a little odd but it was cute.
Elise Testone (Whole Lotta Love) Led Zeppelin – she’s got the pimp spot and she is a true rocker at heart. She also knows this song inside and out because she sings it with her band. I am not a classic rock lover – but I think I am going to enjoy this. It was cool to hear Stevie sing with Elise on Dreams. This girl is infectious – she had me looking up from the keyboard just so I could see what she was doing on stage. She is not imitating Robert Plant – she is channeling him! Phenomenal performance.
Dang – tonight was the best top to bottom episode of the season. I have no idea who is going home and I am not going to try to call a top three! What do you think?
Nicki Minaj and Scotty McCreery will be performing tomorrow night on the results show.
