Tonight the top 12 ladies hit the stage and they have a lot to love up to. Last night the men (and a few boys) were outstanding. Ryan reiterates that 5 women will go through based on America’s votes and the judges will each have a wild card pick. Ryan also lets us know that tomorrow’s episode is going to be “super-sized”. Ugh!
Chelsea Sorrell (23) Cowboy Casanova (Carrie Underwood) – she is from the county and they show her doing “country” things like shooting…she has a nice voice but I’m not sure I would have chosen an AI winner’s song to sing on my first time out. It only brings up comparisons that she may not want. She is not quite to Carrie status yet, but she has a nice vibe.
Erika Van Pelt (26) What About Love (Heart) – mobile DJ Erika wants to be electric tonight. I think this is an odd song choice. It’s a great song, but kind of dated. She has a lovely tone – but I am not sure she sang this well enough or different enough to make her stand out.
Jen Hirsh (25) One and Only (Adele) – I like this Adele song. It hasn’t yet been released as a single but it is one of my favorites from 21. She is unsurprising, but nice in her approach to the song. She makes me smile with that big note at the end of the song. Maybe she’s got something.
Brielle Von Hugel (17) (Sittin’ on The) Dock of the Bay (Otis Redding) – she is the first girl to sing a male song, let’s see if the gender-bending continues. Ugh – a really weak start to this classic tune. I am not loving it so far. She is better in her upper register but I get a pagaenty/forced feeling from this song. One of the weaker performances of both nights.
Hallie Day (24) Feelin’ Good (Nina Simone/Michael Bublé) – I like her simple opening to the song, but she reminds me of Marilyn Monroe when she is on stage. That’s cool and all, but how can she update that? She has a decent voice but she misses quite a few notes and seems old-fashioned to me. I really wanted to love her.
Skylar Laine (18) Stay With Me (Rod Stewart/Faces) – wow, her accent is super thick!! She’s a true country girl, but she is going to rock it out tonight. This is a crazy song choice but she makes it work. She’s singing a male song and I think she actually kept the gender the same (she instead of he). She is the best so far! She is infectious!
Baylie Brown (22) Amazed (Lonestar) – Baylie is in a tough spot…her country song better rock as hard as Skylar’s or harder. Unfortunately she paled in comparison. Her voice was weak and her notes broke all over the place. This may be the last time we see Baylie up on the stage.
Hollie Cavanagh (18) Reflection (Christina Aguilera) – I think Hollie is from Texas via Britain…there is a bit of an accent there. This is a good song for her to sing and she really has a lovely voice, but there seems to be something off with this performance…like she was a little behind or out of breath or something. Her last glory note was great though, so kudos for that.
Hayley Johnson (23) Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) (Eurythmics) – oh no…the background singers are out-singing her. She is really off, her voice cannot handle this song. She basically screams the whole song (after the low alto bit). Hot mess…
Shannon Magrane (16) Go Light Your World (Kathy Troccoli) – she is singing a contemporary Christian song. It is a power ballad and may engender her to that portion of America that loves this type of music. To me it feels like she is running for Miss America and the placement of the choir seemed cheesy to me (and I love a choir). I will say she sings older than her 16 years indicate, I just wish she would have chosen a better song. Meh.
Jessica Sanchez (16) Love You I Do (Jennifer Hudson) – she has swollen vocal chords and was not able to rehearse. I love this girl though and I think America does as well, she should be ok. This girl has cajones – this is a huge Jennifer Hudson song with a nice range. She is weak on the lower notes but she soars when she needs to. The girl can sing…not going to lie. I’m not worried – she’ll be one of the five girls in.
Elise Testone (28) One and Only (Adele) – uh oh…who’s going to sing it better?? Her first notes sung at the piano tell me that she has a better handle of this song than Jen Hirsch did. I love her raspy voice and her syncopation. She gets the pimp spot tonight and she uses it for all it’s worth. She is a favorite!
I think that there are a lot of pageant singers in the girls category. I want these ladies to branch out like Elise did! Tomorrow should be interesting…I think I can only pick 3 or 4 singers that impressed me tonight.
- Skylar Laine
- Elise Testone
- Jessica Sanchez
